No, not the song by Donnovan. Though definitely on the same level of pure awesome greatness.

The hurdy gurdy, a drone instrument, is the love child of a violin and an organ grinder. Crank operated it creates a drone bass note, on top of which you pluck, layer and press the remaining strings to create something quite fantastic.

Originating back in medieval times, before the advent of electronic amplification, the hurdy gurdy could be so large it required two people to operate. Though not all were of such behemoth size. Modern versions are thankfully much smaller and require only one person to operate.

For a modern example of Hurdy Gurdy awesomeness, go check out Guilhem Desq - Visions.

Now that we are all on the same page, and agree that the hurdy gurdy is awesome, have some youtube clips for your earholes.

Naturally someone has made an Electric Hurdy Gurdy, see Pantera “Cowboys From Hell” - hurdy gurdy & drums cover - Guilhem Desq. For the more moderen-medieval with a like for drone and large sounds, there is Dancing In The Rain. Neo Medieval Tune. Hurdy-Gurdy, Organ & Drum. Lastly there is a bit of celtic-esq folk in “The Longing” - Patty Gurdy (Hurdy Gurdy Music).

That is all. I did not say each post had to have a word count measured in tonnage.
